Fifth Division A – It wasn’t good, but it was important. The two lowest placed teams in the fifth division met in Leimuiden. Earlier this week, Kickers’69 doubled its points tally with a convincing 6-1 victory over SVO Buytenpark. Despite more than one missed penalty, the home team was able to hold off the visiting DVV Delft and with a 3-1 victory, the Leimuiden team can confidently speak of a very successful resumption of the competition.

A cracker at the bottom of the fifth class, with a lot of tension. The ingredients for a great game of football seemed to be missing, but of course neither team cared much about that. According to Kickers player Adriaan Roos, the home team was full of confidence, but knew that the visitors had left a good impression in recent matches. Roos: “We wanted to take the lead as quickly as possible and kill the game as quickly as possible. The chances were there, but 4 or 5 big opportunities didn’t seem enough in the first half, until we fortunately took the lead around the 30th minute. The opponent’s goalkeeper tried to play the right back, but our striker Milan Otgaar was in between and was able to finish easily.”

The second half went in all directions. After a cross from Brian van Vliet, Jeroen Straathof headed in at the far post for 2-0 and a penalty from Tijs van der Hoorn made it 3-0. The score could have been much higher, but the home team managed to kill not one, but two penalties. After an hour, Kickers led 3-0 and had missed two penalties, after which the focus disappeared from the team. Roos was critical of this, despite the positive result.

“It shouldn’t happen to us that we sink so far in the last twenty minutes. Although we only conceded one goal in that final phase, we were so careless and sloppy that it puts a very small blemish on the good feeling of this match.” That good feeling is of course completely understandable. In the first half of the competition, Kickers only achieved three points from draws and after a week into the new year the team is already at 9. The path away from the bottom places seems to have been started.

Kickers ’69 – DVV Delft: 3-1 (1-0). Goalscorers Kickers: Otgaar, Straathof, Van der Hoorn.
