If LeBron James Sr. and his son, Bronny, will make NBA history Tuesday night by playing the same game for the Los Angeles Lakers, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr.
The first father-son duo to play in the Major Leagues plans to attend the Lakers’ season opener, where the entire crowd is hoping the James family can accomplish the same incredible sporting feat in the NBA.
“The first father and son to play baseball, (and) now the first father and son to play basketball,” the younger Griffey told MLB Network Radio. “It was very important for my father and me to be there. We are making history. Now we can see history, so that’s the cool thing.
Bronny made it clear that he did not know if he would be able to play against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Lakers coach JJ Redick said that he has finalized the lineup for the game in Los Angeles.
However, it seems that the Lakers will not wait to make the story they have planned since the franchise acquired Bronny with the 55th overall pick this summer to play with LeBron, the 39-year-old leading scorer in NBA history. The father and son have been playing in the preseason, taking the court together for the first time outside of Palm Springs earlier this month.
Bronny grew up in his father’s locker rooms and arenas in Cleveland, Miami and Los Angeles, so he is ready to transcend the historic moment and the daily routine of becoming a contributing NBA player. The Lakers will start the season with three home games in five days.
Bronny is not expected to be an immediate rotation player for the Lakers, but there is a good chance that Bronny will start the season with the Lakers before playing in the G League for more playing time.
Still, he’s excited to reach this historic moment, and he’s sure what he’ll call his father on the court after LeBron forbids him from using “daddy.”
“Maybe Bron,” said Bronny with a smile.
