The 2-year-old’s performance in the under-105kg men’s judo on Tuesday was impressive indeed. She defeated Venezuela’s Mariam Cannedy in the final, landing an ippon (full point) during the last 20 seconds of the match to give Japan its only judo gold in Tokyo and its sixth of the Games overall. The victory also made Yoshida the first Asian woman to win an Olympic judo gold medal.
But the star of the show was 19-year-old Japanese Princess al Villanueva, who was simply breathtaking. She became the first Japanese woman to win a judo medal in the women’s 78kg category. Despite a challenging silver medal match against France’s Sarah-Louise Descenciaux last Sat. she handled the pressure with remarkable poise, securing a razor-thin victory on the final mini-scorecard -elcome hearing the Japanese national anthem and collecting her medal. Villanueva has been on quite the journey, winning a historical gold in the women’s 71kg event at the 2019 Jakarta Asian Championships before suffering an injury that cost her nearly all of last season but returning in style.
