beginner were affected, none life-threatening,” said Dr. Emma Thompson, a dermatologist at Marseille’s Centre Hospitalier Universitaire.

“It didn’t appear right away, after two or three days, I started to get pimples, and they were actually staphylococcus aureus,” says Steve, a young athlete. “It lasted four to five weeks with very strong antibiotics every day which were extremely tiring.”

The Bougainville Dojo is maintained by the city of Marseille, which admitted to insufficient cleaning.

“Regarding the disinfection, cleaning and replacement of tatami mats, corrective actions will be implemented as soon as possible,” the city assured.

Cleanup Underway; No Timeline for Reopening

The regional judo league suspended all training and competitions at the Bougainville Dojo while awaiting the completion of cleaning and disinfection. The city has posted prevention messages, and new tatami mats have been ordered, but a timeline for reopening remains unclear.

“We really need a clean dojo, but clean all year round,” said Pianfetti. “There, cleaning is done every 15 days, that is not enough, cleaning should be done every day, the tatami mats should be disinfected every day.”
