Witten. At the U-21 European Championships, Mathilda Niemeyer from Hattingen only lost to the eventual champion. An explosive German duel awaits in the small final.
Judo fighter Mathilda Niemeyer from the 1. JJJC Hattingen before the tournament. After all, she had already stood on the podium last year as third place at the European Championships. The 18-year-old managed the same feat again: in the decisive fight, she prevailed against a teammate from the DJB national squad.
The top talent from Hattingen, who competed this year for the Witten Bundesliga team Sport-Union Annen and will be competing in the U21 World Championships in Tajikistan in October, was quite happy with the draw for the competition in the weight class up to 78 kilograms. After a bye in the first round, Niemeyer continued with a duel with Croatian Lorena Perkovic. She had little trouble with her, winning early with an Ippon.

After that, however, she faced the Frenchwoman Lila Mazzarino in the quarterfinals. “She’s an unpleasant opponent,” Niemeyer had said before leaving for Tallinn. And somehow the German champion couldn’t find a real way to beat her rival, who only needed a waza-ari score to get into the semifinals. Later, the Frenchwoman even made it to the final, which she won early against a Serbian.

For Mathilda Niemeyer, however, the path followed via the consolation round, where she first defeated the Finn – thus paving the way to the “small final” for bronze against the Bottroper Ronja Buddenkotteagainst whom the Hattinger had won the German championship title. There were no points in the regular fight time – it was only after almost a minute in extra time that Niemeyer managed to score a point with a lifting technique and was happy to win bronze, just like last year. The next day in the team competition, she and her teammates were not lucky – they were eliminated right at the start with a 3:4 defeat against the Spaniards.
