Joseph-Ki-Zerbo University: tribute to Professor François Zougmoré, a pioneer of physics in Burkina

For having devoted decades to the transmission of knowledge, Professor François Zougmoré was honored.

The Materials and Environment Laboratory (LAME) of Joseph-Ki-Zerbo University (UJKZ), the academic community and the IEEE-BF subsection paid a vibrant tribute, this Thursday, November 28, 2024, to Professor François Zougmoré, full professor in electronics, instrumentation and measurements, pioneer of fundamental research and development in technical sciences, admitted to retirement in 2022. This recognition ceremony for his contribution to teaching and research is held during the 4th IEEE multi-conference.

The opening ceremony took place at the A600 lecture hall located on the Zogona campus in the presence of Dr Aminata Zerbo/Sabané, minister in charge of the transition
digitale, godmother of the ceremony, Professor Jean François Silas Kobiané, president of the Joseph-Ki-Zerbo University, Professor Cheick Amadou Bamba Gueye of the Cheikh-Anta-Diop University of Senegal, the general chair of the conference. The event mobilized the university community, in this case, teacher-researchers, students and former collaborators, UFR/SEA staff, friends and family members of Professor Zougmoré, all who came to honor “the chief physicist”.

His fellow teacher-researchers and students from other public and private universities in Burkina were also present at this tribute ceremony. After 35 years of service, the university community thus pays a well-deserved tribute to Professor François Zougmoré, on the occasion of the 4th edition of the conference dedicated to the contribution of research to the development of the Sahel. During the ceremony, rich in color and marked by conviviality, the different components of the university community magnified the immense contribution of Professor François Zougmoré for the development of physics in Burkina. The president of the Joseph-Ki-Zerbo University, Professor Jean François Silas Kobiané, praised the actions of the physicist Zougmoré in the construction of
the mother university of Burkina Faso.

He highlighted his role in supervising students, publishing more than 162 scientific articles and creating the first physics research laboratory in the Department of Exact and Applied Sciences (SEA), namely the Materials and Environment Laboratory ( BLADE). The current head of the LAME, Professor Zakaria Koalaga, also president of the local organizing committee of the IEEE MNE3SD, also thanked this great visionary, Professor François Zougmoré. He is a source of inspiration for many physicists, according to Professor Koalaga. In terms of testimonies, Dr Aminata Zerbo, former student of Professor François Zougmoré and current minister responsible for the transition
digital, praised the work of “an emblematic figure of research in Burkina Faso and the sub-region”.

She wanted to honor “the man who devoted 35 years of his career” to pushing the frontiers of science and strengthening the research ecosystem in Burkina Faso. Professor Zougmoré was winner of the “Energy-Environment-Climate” public research trophy in 2015. The film of testimonies screened for the occasion also highlights the human and scientific qualities of the man who left his mark on the The evolution of physics through the establishment of the master’s degree and the third cycle of physics at the UJKZ. In recognition of his contributions to the world of research, Professor François Zougmoré received numerous gifts from the university community as well as his biological family.
