Joel Embiid Returns: 76ers’ MVP Back in Action After Injury Layoff
Key Return for Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers got some much-needed reinforcement on Sunday as two-time NBA scoring champion Joel Embiid returned to the starting lineup against the Atlanta Hawks. Embiid had missed the last nine games nursing a sore right knee.
What’s Been Going On?
“I think they’re just trying to get it to where he feels good enough to play.”
The 7-footer had played in only six of 20 games this season, averaging 19.7 points and 5.5 rebounds. Despite his absence, the 76ers are 4-2 with Embiid in the lineup.
The Big Three Together
For the first time this season, the 76ers are set to feature their All-Star trio of Embiid, oft-injured Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey in the starting lineup.
Injury Woes and the Impending Schedule
- Embiid last played on Nov. 8, missing the subsequent game due to not being cleared for back-to-backs following April surgery on his left knee.
- The 76ers have an intensive schedule ahead, playing four games in the next seven days, including matchups against the Washington Wizards, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers.
A History of Injuries
This isn’t Embiid’s first rodeo with injuries. Since entering the league, he has struggled with ailments ranging from stress fractures to torn ligaments. Despite all that, the 76ers signed him to a three-year, $193 million extension in 2024, with a player option for the 2028-29 season.
