Sinner’s Triumphant Return: From Doping Ban to Audience with Pope Leo XIV
After serving a three-month doping ban, Jannik Sinner marked his comeback in style, storming through to the semifinals at the Masters tournament in Rome. But before that, he had an audience with a very special fan – Pope Leo XIV.
Sinner’s Stellar Comeback
Raring to go after his ban, Sinner thrilled fans with a confident victory over Francisco Cerundolo, securing his place in the quarterfinals. He then SNAG a win against Casper Ruud, booking his spot in the semifinals as of May 16, 10 a.m.
From Tennis Court to Vatican
Sandwiched between these victories was a unique off-court encounter. Sinner and his entourage met Pope Leo XIV, who recently outed himself as a tennis fan.
“Don’t bring the Sinner with it,” Leo XIV jested with media representatives earlier in the week.

But Sinner took the humor in stride, presenting the Pontifex with a tennis racket and ball as a gift. Leo XIV, in turn, joked about taking on Wimbledon with it.

No Match for the Pope (Yet)
When asked about a potential match with the Pope, Sinner playfully declined. “Better not,” he replied, citing the risk to Vatican furniture.
The Pope’s passion for tennis is well-known. According to the Italian newspaper “Il Messaggero,” Leo XIV has a formidable backhand and considers himself an “amateur tennis player.”
Did you know?
Pope Leo XIV is not the first Pontifex to love tennis. Former Pope John Paul II was also a fan, often playing at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
What’s Next for Sinner?
With his impressive comeback, Sinner is firmly back in the spotlight. Fans eagerly await his next move in the world of tennis.
