Italy Shatters European Judo Championships Record with Eight Medals in Montenegro
The Italian judo team has made history at the European Championships in Montenegro, clinching a record-breaking eight medals, including two more on the final day of individual competitions. The stellar performance surpassed the previous best of seven medals achieved in 1999 and 2002.
PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCES BY TANAVO AND PIRELLI
Asya Tavano, the 22-year-old Udinese judoka, secured her third career bronze medal in European Championships, following victories in Sofia (2022) and Montpellier (2023). She began her campaign by defeating Serbian Milica Zabic with an arm lever (Ude Garami) and took just 30 seconds to defeat Turkish opponent Hilal Ozturk in the quarterfinals.
Gennaro Pirelli, a 24-year-old Neapolitan, accounted for his second consecutive bronze medal, having finished third in Zagreb last year. Showcasing impressive resilience, Pirelli engaged in five battles, winning four of them and never yielding to his opponents.
Erica Simonetti, competing in the +78 kg category, also made her mark, defeating Ukrainian Ruslana Bulavina in the opening round before falling to French competitor Fanny Estelle Posvite.
