Impressive Performance in Belgium
Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium – The Italian Judo team demonstrated its rising prowess on the international stage at the Kata World Series this past Saturday, March 7th. Marina Cairone (Palestra Ginnastica Ferrara), partnered with Laura Bugo (San Mamolo Judo), secured a silver medal in the Ju no kata Senior specialty, competing against 220 athletes from 16 nations.
What is Judo Kata?
Judo kata involves the execution of pre-established techniques performed collaboratively by two athletes: the Tori
(the performer) and the Uke
(the receiver). Evaluation focuses on precision, fluidity, strength, speed, and balance, alongside the correct execution of the kata’s opening and closing movements.
Cairone and Bugo specialize in Ju No Kata, a form that emphasizes compliance and adaptation. This style combines attack and defense techniques in slow, controlled movements, teaching how to utilize an opponent’s strength for defensive purposes and adapt to changing circumstances.
Italy’s Strong Showing
The Italian team’s performance was a significant achievement, earning them a leading position on the medal table – a result comparable to a European Championship. This success highlights the growing momentum of the Judo-Kata movement within Italy.
Recent Successes
- Martina Cairone and Laura Bugo previously won gold at the Italia Kata Trophy judo “Memorial Sugiyama” in Leinì (Turin) in January 2026.
- The pair’s performance at the PalaMaggiore in Turin drew
convincing applause
from spectators.
Looking Ahead
This silver medal serves as a strong foundation for Cairone and Bugo as they prepare for the next stage of the IJF Kata World Series, scheduled for Gijon, Spain.
