ST. LOUIS – Iowa State’s hopes for a deep NCAA Tournament run took a hit Friday as star forward Joshua Jefferson suffered a sprained left ankle early in the Cyclones’ 108-74 rout of Tennessee State. His status for Sunday’s second-round matchup against Kentucky is uncertain.

Injury Details and Initial Assessment

Jefferson went down less than three minutes into the game after landing awkwardly on his left ankle following a layup. He immediately expressed pain and was helped off the court and taken to the locker room. Initial X-rays were negative, according to Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger.

Jefferson was seen on crutches with ice wrapped around his ankle. He did not return to the game.

The senior forward is a key player for the Cyclones, averaging 17 points, 7.6 rebounds, and nearly five assists per game this season. He was an all-Big 12 performer and considered a possible second-round NBA Draft prospect.

Iowa State’s next opponent, Kentucky, as well secured a spot in the second round, but not without a fight. The Wildcats defeated Santa Clara 89-84 in overtime after a dramatic sequence of late-game plays. Otega Oweh of Kentucky tied the game with a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of regulation.
