The wheelchair basketball sports exchange for women at the university in Peru

From September 30 to October 13, 2024, a group of twelve college wheelchair basketball players from the United States participated in a major exchange program organized by the University of Houston and FHI 360. This program, funded by the Office of Cultural and Educational Affairs of the United States Department of State not only promotes adapted sports, but also empowers women with disabilities and promotes social inclusion.

Activities in Lima include training and workshops at the National Rehabilitation Institute, where athletes deepen their knowledge about adapted sports and rehabilitation. In addition, they participate in volunteering at schools for people with disabilities, contributing to community awareness.

Cultural immersion extends to Cusco, where the group takes a guided tour and visits Machu Picchu, strengthening the connection between sport and local culture. The exchange ended in Lima with a basketball tournament and exhibition game on October 9, which allowed the players to share experiences with their Peruvian counterparts.

The United States Office of Sports Diplomacy, Adaptive Athletics and FHI 360 are committed to creating opportunities for people with disabilities, promoting positive change through sports and education.
