Mountain bikes, crampons, rollerblades, kimonos… A large number of sports equipment were put into play last Wednesday at the gymnasium in the city of Castellas. To try to win them, all you had to do was participate in the activities for the residents of the neighborhood. By learning several sports, such as boxing, basketball or tennis, young and old alike signed up for the draw which took place at the end of the day.
Marie Wattel was at the origin of this initiative via the “sport and sharing” association and in collaboration with the Saint-Joseph social center. “The objective of this operation was to collect new or second-hand sports equipment and redistribute them to make people from disadvantaged neighborhoods want to play sports.“, explains the three-time European champion who herself offered a complete outfit from the French swimming team.
Parents and children combined, nearly fifty participants responded to the call.
“This afternoon is a superb initiative. It helps keep children away from screens, says Leila. Today, children have difficulty integrating socially and sport allows them to make friends. My son already does judo and there he discovered tennis and boxing.“
“This event is a real breath of fresh air, says Malik, one of the volunteers, happily. The children of Castellas need hope as well as a breath of fresh air and sport allows them to get it.“An operation which was very successful and which could be repeated.
