Indonesian Doubles Hope: Fajar Alfian Eyes Title Wins Despite Ongoing Drought

— Indonesia’s men’s doubles teams might have had a challenging year so far, but top shuttler Fajar Alfian is confident that a title drought will soon be a thing of the past. Despite their historic dominance, Indonesian pairs have yet to secure a World Tour title in 2023, but Fajar believes a strategic partnership switch could change their fortunes.

In an interview with the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), the fifth-ranked Fajar shared his optimism, “Our men’s doubles have not won a title this year, but I genuinely believe it’s just a matter of time before one of our pairs clinches a championship. Some of us have reached finals but fell short. It won’t be easy, but I’m confident we can do better moving forward.”

A Temporary Partnership Twist

Fajar, usually paired with Rian Ardianto, will temporarily switch partners for the upcoming Japan (July 18-23) and China (July 25-30) Opens. He will team up with Shohibul Fikri, filling in for Daniel Marthin, who underwent knee surgery earlier this month.

Road to Recovery

  • First Challenge: Fajar-Shohibul face world No. 8 Indonesians Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza in the opening round.
  • Potential Rounds Ahead: A win could set up a clash against Denmark’s Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard or Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-huei-Yang Po-hsuan in the second round, and possibly Malaysia’s world No. 1 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani in the quarterfinals.

Other Indonesian Title Hopes

Leo Rolly and Bagas Maulana, ranked world No. 9, also aim to end Indonesia’s title drought. They will start their campaign against Taiwan’s Liu Kuang-heng-Yang Po-han.

Our men’s doubles have not won a title this year but for me, it’s just a matter of time that one of our pairs become champions.

Why the Optimism?

Indonesia’s tradition of badminton dominance, coupled with the depth of talent in their men’s doubles category, fuels Fajar’s confidence. Despite the recent dry spell, Indonesia remains a formidable force on the international stage.

Can the Right Partnership Make the Difference?

Fajar’s temporary switch with Shohibul and Leo’s consistent form with Bagas could indeed spark the change needed to break the title drought. Keep your eyes peeled for these Indonesian pairs as they strive to recapture former glory.

Providing for the Future

With the appropriate partnerships and continued dedication, Indonesia’s men’s doubles can regain their championship form and inspire the next generation of badminton stars.
