Ilguhoe Backs Plan for Massive Dome Stadium Amidst Soaring Baseball Popularity
Ilguhoe Shows Support for Massive Dome Stadium
SEOUL, South Korea – Ilguhoe, an influential sports association, has thrown its weight behind a proposal to build a large dome stadium with a seating capacity of over 50,000. This endorsement comes amidst the growing popularity of professional baseball in South Korea.
Minister’s Plan Echoes Ilguhoe’s Wishes
The association praised the vision of Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Choi Hwi-young, who recently mentioned this idea during a briefing to President Lee Jae-myung. Minister Choi’s long-term perspective on expanding national sports infrastructure resonated with Ilguhoe.
The Need for a Large-Scale Stadium
Ilguhoe emphasized that new baseball stadiums currently being built, such as the Cheongna SSG Dome Stadium, are planned with capacities well below 30,000 seats. In contrast, the surging popularity of professional baseball – with the Samsung Lions attracting over 1.6 million spectators in a single season – necessitates a larger venue. The current major stadiums in Seoul and Busan are unable to meet this growing demand.

A Combination of Entertainment and Baseball
Ilguhoe views Minister Choi’s plan to combine K-pop entertainment content with baseball as an accurate direction for the Korean professional baseball landscape. They believe that large-scale, year-round venues for both sports and performances, like Japan’s Tokyo Dome, are key to enhancing city competitiveness.
Call for Action
Ilguhoe has urged the government to actively consider the construction of a large dome stadium with over 50,000 seats as a major task of national sports policy.
