From Barcelona to Greece and Beyond
Martínez’s career path took him from Barcelona to Greece, where he spent over three years with Panathinaikos and Peristeri. He considered a move to Real Madrid but ultimately chose to play in Greece.
“At that time, the only competitor at a very high level was Real Madrid, only in Spain. I was very fond of Barça and I didn’t want to go to Madrid, I went to Greece,”
Ferrán Martínez
He described his time in Greece as an incredible experience, four great years
.
Recently, Panathinaikos contacted him about becoming an ambassador for the club, an offer he accepted.
A Regret and a Reflection on Team Legacy
Despite his many accomplishments, Martínez expressed regret over a decision made following a serious injury in 1991. He suffered multiple ligament tears in his foot and underwent three surgeries.
“I have made many mistakes, logically. One of them, which is a thorn, is after a very serious injury I had in 1991. I tore the ligaments in my foot and had surgery on it up to three times. I recovered more or less, but when it came to going to the national team, if you were not 100%, you would resign. The coach wanted me to go, but I came to the conclusion that it was better to recover and not go to the Olympic Games, which I very much regret. I could have helped the team and participated in Barcelona ’92.”
Ferrán Martínez
He also reflected on the teams he played with, believing they deserved a European Cup title.
“The generation of Epi, Solozábal, Sibilio, Norris and all of these, where I trained and played for many years, we would have deserved a European Cup.”

He emphasized the spectacular basketball
played during his era, both at FC Barcelona and Joventut.
