François Gagnon and Daryl Reaugh Honored with Prestigious NHL Media Awards
Accomplished Journalist and Broadcaster Recognized for Their Contributions to Hockey
TORONTO — The Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) and NHL Broadcasters’ Association announced on Friday the recipients of the 2025 Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award and Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, recognizing excellence in hockey journalism and broadcasting.
François Gagnon: A Voice of Reason in French Canada
The Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award, honoring the late Montreal newspaper reporter, goes to François Gagnon, a veteran French language NHL beat reporter with over three decades of experience covering the Montreal Canadiens.
“For more than three decades, François Gagnon has been hockey’s voice of reason in French Canada. François is the first voice that hockey-mad Montréal clicks in the morning, because he is unafraid to write the controversial opinion or story, and unflappable in his service to readers. More than that, François is universally respected by his peers, players and executives for his honesty and dedication to his craft.”
— Frank Seravalli, PHWA president
Gagnon began his career covering the expansion Ottawa Senators in the 1990s, honing his skills before becoming the main voice for French-speaking Canadiens fans.
Daryl Reaugh: Painting Vivid Pictures on the Airwaves
The Foster Hewitt Memorial Award, honoring the late “Voice of Hockey” in Canada, goes to Daryl Reaugh, a broadcasting legend with 28 seasons of experience calling Dallas Stars games.
“Daryl Reaugh has been a cornerstone of consistency and eloquence for Stars fans over decades. His unique approach to painting a vivid picture as he analyses the play brings life and enjoyment for all to hear. His use of language is nothing short of sheer wizardry. He has earned his place among the best NHL broadcasters.”
— Chuck Kaiton, NHL Broadcasters’ Association president
With 12 Lone Star Emmy Awards under his belt and stints on national broadcasts for NBC, ABC, ESPN, FOX, and CBC, Reaugh’s expertise and unique style have made him a fan favorite in Dallas and across the NHL.
