Brazil is officially an Alpine country because of former Norwegian Lucas Broten. With his mother’s last name Pineiro, he took second place in the giant slalom at Beaver Creek and recorded a historic first podium for Brazilians in skiing.
Broten was overtaken only by the 35-year-old Swiss Thomas Tummler, who made a phenomenal first run and from over a second lead, he was 12 hundredths ahead of the Brazilian.
The third place on the podium was the Slovenian Zhan Kranets at 58 hundredths.
Event king and World Cup winner Marco Odermatt (Switzerland) failed to complete a third consecutive giant slalom, having won 9 in a row in the event last season.
After his 10th place in the super giant slalom, French star Alexi Pentoureau finished 16th in the giant slalom after jumping 13 places ahead in the second downhill.
