Controversy Surrounding Hirving Lozano’s Play in Champions League Match
PSV secured a narrow victory against Lens in the Champions League at Philips Stadium, keeping their hopes of advancing to the next phase alive. However, the match was not without controversy, as Mexican forward Hirving Lozano’s play in the final moments stirred debate.
In an attempt to avoid last-minute pressure from the Ligue 1 team, Lozano skillfully and swiftly dribbled the ball towards the penalty area. As he approached, he took a shot on goal, only to have goalkeeper Brice Samba deflect it. This missed opportunity could have resulted in a goal if Lozano had passed the ball to his unmarked teammate Johan Bakayoko, who was positioned on the right side of the area.
Following this incident, PSV’s coach, Peter Bosz, acknowledged that Lozano “may not have seen” his teammate and, as a result, failed to pass the ball to complete the potential scoring opportunity, which could have secured a 2-0 lead for PSV.
Currently, PSV occupies the second position in Group B of the Champions League, trailing behind Premier League club Arsenal, who leads the group with nine points. PSV and Lens both have the same number of points, but due to the head-to-head record, PSV holds a higher position.
Next weekend, PSV will face PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie, aiming to solidify their leadership and maintain their impressive form. This match will be broadcasted on ESPN via Star+.
In the Champions League on November 29th, PSV will visit Sevilla, a team that desperately needs a win to keep their qualification hopes alive, although their chances are slim.
