The new coach of the National Team, Gustavo Alfaro, is set to arrive in the country this Saturday afternoon, bringing with him a strong message of unity as Costa Rica embarks on its path towards the 2026 World Cup.
In his inaugural statement as the Tricolor’s new coach, Alfaro expressed his immense pride in taking on this new challenge with Costa Rica.
“Both for me and my coaching staff, it is an incredible privilege to represent the destiny of the country’s soccer, as we fully understand the significance of soccer to an entire nation,” he stated in an interview with Fedefútbol.
The 61-year-old Argentine coach is determined to work tirelessly to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup in North America, aiming not just to participate but to make a significant impact.
“We will soon be there, present in the stadiums, observing training sessions, and ensuring that the team has a presence in every corner of the country. We want to create a team that belongs to everyone, where each player has the right to dream and where the footballers themselves are fans of the national team. There is no greater feeling than representing your country,” emphasized Alfaro.
Known as “Lechuga” in his home country, Alfaro previously led the Ecuadorian team in the last World Cup held in Qatar in 2022, although they fell short of reaching the round of 16.
“The National Team unites a country. The time ahead is limited, and the work ahead is extensive. That’s why I urge everyone to join this shared dream, because together we can achieve what we aspire to achieve: participation in the next World Cup. I hope to arrive soon and start building a team that respects its past while embracing the challenges of the future,” he highlighted.
The official presentation of Alfaro and his coaching staff is expected to take place next week at a hotel in the capital.
