Guillermo Coria’s Uncertain Future After Argentina’s Stunning Victory: Will He Continue as Captain

Guillermo Coria Contemplates Future After Davis Cup Victory

By Tomás Rodríguez Couto | Sep 18, 2023, 08:39 ET

Guillermo Coria surprised both locals and strangers with his recent statements. Following Argentina’s impressive 4-0 victory over Lithuania in the Davis Cup, the Albiceleste Captain expressed doubts about his future. “I’m going to take a few days to reflect on whether I can continue contributing to the development of the younger players,” he stated.

Coria emphasized the importance of discussing his role with his coaching staff and evaluating his significance at this stage. These thoughts arose after witnessing Tomás Etcheverry’s victorious debut against Edas Butvilas, with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Surprisingly, the former No. 3 player in the ATP world rankings did not rule out the possibility of stepping aside. This revelation comes as a surprise, considering his previous desire to continue and his openness to personal teams of each player being involved with the team. Despite this uncertainty, Coria has confirmed his participation as a leader among men in the upcoming Pan American Games Santiago 2023, alongside Mercedes Paz for the women’s team. Additionally, he expressed his intention to be present at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in a similar capacity.

Coria emphasized the importance of consensus with his coach, as he does not want to confuse the players. He believes that it is crucial to discuss matters with the coaching staff to ensure a unified approach. While he hopes to continue for another year due to his comfort in the role, he is also content with leaving the team if necessary, as he believes they have built a solid foundation to compete for the Salad Bowl.

Reflecting on the past two years, Coria expressed his emotional journey of returning to the circuit and the recognition he received from former colleagues such as Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Ferrer. He also acknowledged the pride he felt in meeting numerous individuals. However, he emphasized the need to be convinced of his ability to continue contributing. If he believes the team requires a different approach, he is willing to step aside and allow someone else to take the reins. While he contemplates his decision, he remains hopeful that he can continue supporting the team.

Coria’s previous victory as Captain came in 2022 when Argentina faced the Czech Republic. However, there have been defeats in the Finals against Sweden, Italy, and Croatia in Bologna in 2022, as well as against Finland in Espoo in February, shortly after the 2023 Australian Open. It is important to note that Coria’s contract with the Argentine Tennis Association expires in December of this year.
