Grafing · The Aibling-Grafing fighting community won the Bavarian Judo League in 2023, but due to the unexpected and great success, they could not decide to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga of the German Judo Federation. Those responsible chose the path of another year in the Bavarian League to see whether it was “a flash in the pan” or whether there was more to it.

Coach Martin Garic and the two team managers Robert Buendowski and Valentin Larasser, the first manager primarily responsible for the Aiblinger block, the second for the Grafinger judoka, went into the 2024 season highly motivated and, through frequent, consistent training and special measures, managed to further develop the team and position it in terms of performance above the 2023 level.

Although there was a defeat against the TV Erlangen II team on the very first day of fighting at the beginning of 2024, the fighting community subsequently improved from encounter to encounter and has been undefeated since then.

Even at the season finale in Harteck, Munich, they dominated their opponents, Sportfreunde Friedberg (we reported), at will and once again secured first place in the Bavarian League. The victory trophy was presented by none other than BJV President Klaus Richter, much to the delight of the Aiblinger and Grafinger judoka, who were delighted to win the title again.

But just like in football, “after the fight” is also “before the fight”. The aim now was to convert this excellently fought-for first place into a binding announcement. For this purpose, discussions, emails, etc. went back and forth for weeks and the “task force” set up for this purpose by the clubs KSV Bad Aibling and TSV Grafing met.

The unanimous result of the task force: Both clubs are striving for promotion to the 2nd Judo Bundesliga as a fighting community. The ORGA team, the coaches and the athletes are united behind this decision, which was made unanimously. The desire to be promoted was therefore unanimously expressed and presented to the German Judo Association and the league representative Pamela Bickendorf. It now remains to be seen whether, as in previous years, the announcement will mean that they will be promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga, or whether a qualifying fight day will be required to determine the promoted team.

Coach Martin Garic: “Well, if there is a decisive fight, I’ll be happy to be there. We want to show that we are the best and that we belong in the 2nd Bundesliga! And we’re happy to fight at home and host the thing in the great, new gym at St. George School.” Team managers Valentin Larasser and Robert Buendowski agreed with him, so the KG Aibling-Grafing resumed training during the summer holidays, or rather didn’t stop it altogether.

1. KSV board member Denis Weisser: “I am incredibly proud of the team that fought so well in 2024 and the organization team. I have rarely seen such a unanimous opinion for promotion, both among the team and those responsible. We are looking forward to hopefully being able to compete in the 2nd Bundesliga next season. This would be the highest level that has been reached in almost 50 years of judo in Bad Aibling and Grafing.”
