Goyang Sono is experiencing a remarkable resurgence in the Korean Basketball League (KBL), largely attributed to the innovative leadership of head coach Son Chang-hwan. Appointed in April 2025, Son has implemented a data-driven strategy, drawing comparisons to the Oakland A’s “Moneyball” approach in baseball.

Sono finished 8th in the regular season last year, and Son inherited a team looking for a spark. The team has recently shown top-tier performance, including 4th in scoring, 3rd in successful 3-point shots, and 2nd in catching bounced balls.

A Unique Background for a Modern Coach

Son’s path to the head coaching position is unconventional. He transitioned from a player with Anyang SBS (now Jeong Kwan-jang) to a front office role in public relations before establishing himself as a power analyst. His analytical contributions were instrumental in Jeong Kwan-jang’s championship victory in the 2011-2012 season. He later coached Jeong Kwan-jang, adding two more championships to his resume, before joining Sono in 2023.

Recent Successes and Playoff Hopes

Recently, Goyang Sono has demonstrated significant improvement, winning 8 of their last 9 games. On March 11th, they defeated the first-place team, Changwon LG. This surge has propelled them to 6th place in the league (23 wins, 23 losses), raising hopes for a playoff appearance.

Coach Son has focused on a strategy involving Lee Jeong-hyun, Kevin Kempao, and Lee Jae-do, which has shown positive results after initial challenges due to player absences and recovery from injury.

Coach Son expressed his commitment to the team’s success, stating, “I will think of each game as the final and grant my all.” He believes in a dedicated approach, stating, “I believe that if I don’t sleep at night and move sincerely, (the team) can go down the right path as possible.”
