Fonatur Takes Over Acapulco’s Struggling Golf Club

The once-thriving Golf Club of Acapulco has fallen on hard times following the devastating impact of Hurricane Otis in 2023. In a desperate attempt to keep the club afloat, its association has handed over the reins to the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur).

Financial Struggles Mount After Hurricane Otis

President Efrén Leyva Acevedo revealed that the club had accumulated nearly 28 million pesos in debts. The financial struggles began to pile up after the storm and reached a critical point, leading the association to seek help from the federal government.

Services Continued, Workers Retained

In a show of support for the club’s employees, Fonatur has agreed to retain all staff, including 35 unionized workers and numerous confidence and eventual workers. Leyva also expressed that the rights and facilities of club partners will remain intact, with spaces like the golf course, gym, spa, and other areas continuing to be rented out.

“They are going to take care of them [deer], all I know is that it is a reconstruction of the field and want to connect with the reconstruction they are going to do with the Convention Center.”

Environmental Management Unit (UMA) for Deer Conservation to Continue

Leyva also confirmed that Fonatur will maintain the Environmental Management Unit (UMA) dedicated to the conservation of deer within the club grounds.
