After finishing the year in 31st place in the world, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was rewarded Thursday by the ATP as the most improved player of the year 2024.
Ranked 31st after starting the year above 200th place, Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard was rewarded Thursday by his peers for his lightning progress. The 21-year-old Lyonnais was named “Most Improved Player” of the year 2024, a prize which rewards the player who has improved the most over the past year, the ATP indicated on its website. Winner of the ATP 250 in Lyon (clay) and the ATP 500 in Basel (hard), his first two titles on the ATP circuit, Mpetshi Perricard beat the Briton Jack Draper (15th and semi-finalist of the US Open), the Czech Tomas Machac (25th) and the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (23rd), also in the running for this award. The four nominees were chosen by a jury of specialist journalists and were then responsible for choosing the winner of the “Most Improved Player Award” from among them.
“I am delighted to win this award”which crowns “a good year for my team and myself. Looking forward to 2025,” commented the French player, quoted by the ATP. Also on Thursday, the Italian Matteo Berrettini was rewarded for having made the “comeback of the year”. After a 2023 season rotten by injuries, the former world No.6, Wimbledon finalist in 2021, pocketed three titles in 2024 and climbed back to 34th place in the ATP rankings after falling beyond 150th world ranking . The title of “coach of the year” went to the American Michael Russell, coach of world No.4 Taylor Fritz whom he led to the final of the last US Open, while the 19-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik (48th) was named “revelation of the year”. Frenchman Emmanuel Planque, coach of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, was also in the running for the title of coach of the year. Among the ladies, the title of “player of the year” went to world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, winner of the Australian Open and the US Open in 2024. The Italian Renzo Furlan, coach of World No.4 Jasmine Paolini (finalist at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon) was named coach of the year 2024.
