Gijón Sports Facilities Face Ageism Claims as Yoga and Pilates Access Debated
Published: March 26, 2026
Dispute Over Access to Courses
A controversy has unfolded in Gijón regarding alleged restrictions placed on individuals aged 70 and over seeking to enroll in yoga and pilates courses at municipal sports facilities. The Federation of Neighborhood Associations (FAV) has accused the city council of discriminatory and ageist
practices, sparking a public debate and potential intervention from the Defensor del Pueblo (Public Defender).
Conflicting Accounts
The FAV maintains that barriers exist for those over 70 attempting to register for these popular courses. Yet, Jorge Pañeda, the city councilor for Sports, has desmied
the claims, stating that no recent changes have been implemented regarding course enrollment. He asserts that hundreds
of individuals aged 70 and over are currently participating in both yoga and pilates classes at municipal centers.
The Patronato Deportivo (Sports Board) has clarified that, particularly in the case of pilates, certain contraindications exist centered on protecting health
related to pre-existing medical conditions.
FAV Threatens Further Action
Despite Pañeda’s denial, the FAV remains steadfast in its position. They are prepared to escalate the matter to the Defensor del Pueblo if the alleged restrictions are not lifted. According to Carmen Vila, treasurer of the FAV, If you head to a course to register with 70 years or more, they won’t register you. You are excluded.
She added that the FAV has several complaints in writing
and will pursue action if necessary.
Councilor Responds to Criticism
Councilor Pañeda expressed surprise at the FAV’s statement and questioned why its president, Manuel Cañete, had not contacted him directly. He stated, I don’t understand why he didn’t call me, because he has my phone.
He further commented, We can’t know everything: about the Jove road, Cabueñes, El Solarón and likewise about Pilates.
Enrollment Numbers and Alternative Programs
The Patronato Deportivo provided enrollment figures, reporting 88 users over 70 participating in pilates, 287 in yoga, and three individuals enrolled in both. They highlighted a range of programs available for those over 70, including gymnastics, swimming, aerozumba, aerobics, and tone balance, with a 95% occupancy rate.
Contraindications for pilates participation include concerns related to cardiovascular issues, osteoporosis, arthritis, hernias, hypertension, diabetes, and balance problems. The Patronato also indicated a willingness to explore creating new activities for individuals over 70 depending on the capacity allowed by the contract.
