Remembering Gerrit Weijenberg: A Football Gone Too Soon

Gerrit’s Love for Football

Gerrit Weijenberg, a giant of a man with a red-haired cherubic face, was more than just a football enthusiast—he was a community. Born in Zutphen, Netherlands, Gerrit’s passion for football was evident from his early days.

In 1987, Gerrit arrived at then D1 Daventria as a trainer, marking the first time the club hired someone from outside. A former SV Zutphen head coach, Gerrit found his calling nurturing young talent, a skill he honed at Daventria and continued throughout his life.

Gerrit’s Legacy

Over the years, Gerrit’s impact on the football community was immense. He became a champion with SV Steenderen and an icon at SV Basteom. His son, Robbin, followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a professional footballer.

Gerrit, the Host Father

Gerrit’s kindness extended beyond his immediate family. When Roy Beumer’s son, Milan, moved to De Graafschap, Gerrit and his wife Daniëlle opened their home, acting as Milan’s host family. Milan recalled, “Gerrit was proud of me and wished me every success. He was always talking about football.”

Robbin’s Rise and Gerrit’s Dream Fulfilled

Two years after Gerrit’s sudden passing in 2023, Robbin debuted for Go Ahead Eagles, fulfilling Gerrit’s dream. In April 2025, Go Ahead Eagles won the KNVB Cup, with Robbin as a substitute. “His dream came true,” Roy Beumer narrated.

Sometimes I think about our conversations and stupid whores together and then I look up again, at the TV, to that long at Go Ahead. A bit lanky, socks down, working like a horse. That long red with that mischievous head is enjoying it above that. — Roy Beumer

Gerrit’s Enduring Impact

rit’s legacy lives on through Robbin’s success and the countless lives he touched. His passion for football, his kindness, and his ability to inspire are remembered fondly.

“I miss you long!” Roy Beumer concluded, echoing the sentiments of many who knew Gerrit.
