Geraint Thomas: Reflecting on His Vacation
Updated on November 13, 2023 – 08:46 CET
Geraint Thomas, the renowned British cyclist from Ineos Grenadiers, has recently made some controversial statements regarding his vacation. In an interview with ‘The Times UK’, Thomas revealed, “I think I’ve been intoxicated for 12 out of the 14 nights.”
Furthermore, Thomas, who has triumphed in the Tour de France and secured second place in the Giro d’Italia, shared an anecdote from his early days with Barloworld. He recalled, “They looked at my legs and said I was a bit stocky.” However, Thomas later shed weight and emerged as one of the most prominent riders in the world. Initially supporting Chris Froome and then leading his own team, he went on to win the Tour de France.
“As you grow older, it feels like Groundhog Day. You arrive, and another year of hard work awaits you. Reaching a weight of 70-71 kilograms is relatively easy, but shedding that last kilo and a half is the most challenging,” added the seasoned cyclist.
Now, at the age of 37, Thomas remains competitive and has recently renewed his contract. In the previous season, he narrowly missed out on the pink jersey in the final moments before the Monte Lussari time trial.
Recalling his experience on Mount Lussari, Thomas expressed, “I wished I could be anywhere else in the world. It was incredibly tough. However, it was uplifting to have a race the next day and support Mark Cavendish. Witnessing his victory was heartwarming and brought some light to a difficult day. Seeing Roglic wearing the jersey and celebrating with his son on the podium… it made me realize how close I was to achieving that.”
Contract Extension until 2027
With this contract extension, Thomas will continue competing in the World Tour peloton until the age of 39. Undoubtedly, the Welshman has consistently showcased exceptional performance in recent seasons. He concluded the 2023 season with a remarkable second place in the Giro, relinquishing the pink jersey to Roglic in the penultimate stage, where the Slovenian excelled in the Lussari time trial. In 2022, Thomas secured a third-place finish in the Tour de France and emerged victorious in the Tour of Switzerland.
Furthermore, Thomas will share the leadership of Ineos Grenadiers with the talented Spaniard Carlos Rodríguez, whose contract renewal with the British team is expected to be officially announced in the upcoming days.
“The show goes on. Yes, you’ll have to tolerate me for two more years. Ineos Grenadiers is like a second home to me, and I have a deep passion for competitive cycling. I have never considered doing anything else,” affirmed ‘G’ upon confirming his contract extension.
