History in the Making

In the heart of the wave of integration and development between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, an unprecedented model emerged: the Fujian-Taiwan Joint Team, also known as the Fujian Sea Shark Baseball Team. A year ago, it was established to carry the dreams and expectations of baseball enthusiasts across the strait and embarked on an inspirational journey.

Policy Foundation and Formation

• At the 15th Straits Forum in 2023, Wang Huning announced the “Opinions on Supporting Fujian to explore a new path for cross-strait integration and development,” including the promotion of youth characteristic sports projects like baseball and softball.
• The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued the “Opinions on Supporting Fujian’s Exploration of New Roads for Cross-Strait Integration Development Construction of Cross-Strait Integration Development Demonstration Zone” later that same year, proposing the establishment of the Fujian-Taiwan Baseball and Softball Regional Development Center.

Approval and Establishment

With the approval of the General Administration of Sports of China and the China Baseball Association, Taiwanese athletes began representing Fujian Province in national baseball events. On April 25, 2024, the Fujian Sea Shark Baseball Team was officially established, marking another milestone in cross-strait sports integration.

Player Recruitment and Coaching Staff

Through collaboration between both sides, six Taiwanese athletes and 15 mainland players joined forces, sharing a common love for baseball. Indistinguishable on the field, they united as members of the Fujian provincial team. Lin Yongxiang, a pitcher from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to re-prove himself and contribute to the team’s success.

Coaching Excellence

The coaching team, comprising elites in baseball from both sides of the strait, brought their rich experience and cutting-edge tactical concepts, infusing professionalism into the team. Taiwanese coach Yu Wenbin recognized the unique bond between players and hoped to facilitate further cross-strait baseball cultural and talent exchanges.

Historic Breakthrough: Premier League Participation

In an unprecedented move, the Fujian Sea Shark Baseball Team became the first sports team from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to participate in the Chinese Baseball League. This historic breakthrough was approved by the General Administration of Sports of China, opening doors for future cross-strait sports collaborations.

Mission and Legacy

The Fujian Sea Shark Baseball Team carries a massive responsibility: promoting the integration and development of cross-strait sports, fostering cultural exchange, and, of course, growing the game of baseball.
