Tragic Loss: DEL2 Icon Wade Macleod Dies at 38

The ice hockey world is mourning the loss of former DEL2 star Wade Macleod, who passed away at the age of 38. The Canadian striker, who had been battling a brain tumor since 2013, lost his fight against cancer on September 19, 2025.

Macleod’s wife, Karly, announced the sad news on Instagram, stating that he passed away peacefully in her arms, surrounded by family.

Delays and Comebacks

Originally planned to switch from Starbulls Rosenheim to Löwen Frankfurt in 2016/17, a relapse in Canada postponed the move. However, after a successful operation, Macleod joined Frankfurt in summer 2017. The following season, he signed with Dresden Eislöwen but had to turn down the contract due to another relapse.

Cancer’s Recurring Shadow

Despite numerous operations and temporary recoveries, Macleod’s disease returned repeatedly. After a brief respite, he continued his career in the UK and Norway before hanging up his skates in 2022 to spend more time with his family. A stroke during a camping trip in 2023 brought the sad news that the tumor had returned. Although he underwent further treatment, Macleod’s health continued to deteriorate.

DEL2’s Tribute

“With great concern, the DEL2 learned of Wade Macleod’s passing. Wade, who played in the DEL2 for two seasons, will be remembered as a warm, great teammate. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones.”DEL2
