A surprise within a surprise, at the end of the touching day of farewells which saw Carlos Sainz and his father lap around the Fiorano track with two examples of the Ferrari F1-75, the 2022 single-seater with which the Spaniard had taken the first victory of his career in Great Britain. The Cavallino leaders have in fact decided to gift the same car to the Spanish driver, as a sign of gratitude for the four seasons spent in Maranello and for the generosity shown on the track with the red car until the last race in Abu Dhabi.

Sainz Happy ending Ferrari

There couldn’t have been a nicer way for Sainz to end his adventure at Ferrari. The story had its happy ending. And it was not at all obvious, if you rewind the tape to 2024 and think about the fact that Carlos played the entire championship knowing that he would be leaving to make room for His Majesty Lewis Hamilton, already signed for 2025. But the son of art carried out its task with professionalism, dedication and altruism towards the team, contributing with Charles Leclerc to coming close to the Constructors’ World Championship, lost by just 14 points to McLaren. And so, in addition to the possibility of sharing the emotion of F.1 with Carlos senior, his father, a rally legend and winner of four Dakars, the unexpected gift also arrived. In fact, it seems that it was not included in Sainz’s contractual agreements.

LIKE VETTEL AND ALONSO

Before Sainz, two other drivers had received this special award in the recent past, underlining the importance of the decision. They were Sebastian Vettel, driver of the red team from 2015 to 2020, and Fernando Alonso who had raced with the Cavallino from 2010 to 2014. Two world champions. In some way, Sainz will remain linked to Ferrari forever, even if from January he will face his eleventh year in F.1, opening a new chapter with Williams. “For me, the most exciting moments with Carlos will remain this year’s victory in Australia, on his return after the appendicitis operation, and last year the pole in Monza and the victory in Singapore. I spent two good seasons together to him and I thank him,” Vasseur said. From today, in the Sainz garage in Madrid, in addition to the splendid Ferrari supercars bought in recent years, there will be a real red F.1.
