FC Groningen is counting on a divorce with Kevin van Veen. Club and player both have the intention to part ways before the end of the transfer window.
FC Groningen invested heavily in the arrival of Van Veen (33) a year ago, but he did not perform in the style of play that Dick Lukkien has in mind. The striker lost his starting place and was loaned to Kilmarnock in the past six months. That was not a success story.
In the summer, Van Veen returned to FC Groningen, where he is not eligible for a new chance. The attacker is not part of the selection and trains with the reserves. FC Groningen and Van Veen himself are now busy finding a solution.
According to Art Langeler, manager of football & training at FC Groningen, ‘there’s a lot going on’ around Van Veen. ‘We’ll see how that develops’, he says. ‘We certainly don’t think Kevin will still be here after September 1st and Kevin doesn’t think so either. Now the game is going on of where is he going and what are the conditions.’
‘We have good contact with Kevin about this’, Langeler emphasizes. He hopes to find a club that wants to buy out Van Veen’s contract, which still has two years to run. ‘That is the intention. But if the pressure increases, everything becomes more fluid’, Langeler refers to a possible transfer-free departure. That would at least free FC Groningen of Van Veen’s high salary.
Laros Duarte
In the meantime, it is only a matter of time before FC Groningen announces that Laros Duarte will leave the club. The 27-year-old midfielder is currently in Hungary, to complete his transfer to Puskás Akadémia FC. Due to the transfer issues, Duarte was already absent from the won away match against RKC Waalwijk last Saturday.
