The 211 families, totaling 670 people, affected by the rupture of a main pipe of the aqueduct this Sunday afternoon in the Sinaí neighborhood, commune 2-Santa Cruz, receive support from the authorities.

Since the beginning of the emergency, the DAGRD and other relief agencies have been aware of the situation. The technical team has detected 13 homes with structural damage, of which ten have required temporary evacuation.

Among the families are 469 adults; 218 girls, boys and adolescents; 59 older adults; 26 people with disabilities and 161 pets.

“We have been attending to the emergency from the first moment, yesterday, in the afternoon. We were with the families until the early hours of the morning. Follow the process. There is no loss of life and there are five injured people, who were treated. Now continue entering each of the homes to verify the amount of damage and how to provide solutions to the people. First come lives, people. These families have to recover everything they lost,” said Mayor Federico Gutiérrez Zuluaga.

Assistance includes the delivery of humanitarian aid, with food kits and psychosocial guidance for the 211 families; Also, support is provided with the transfer of belongings and the care of pets.

The Mayor’s Office of Medellín and EPM have distributed mats and food kits, and have offered hotel accommodation to 29 families who do not have self-shelters or nearby support networks.

From the Unified Command Post, nearly 500 municipal servants attend to the eventuality. Between yesterday and today, the mayor has been present at the site on two occasions.

The Presentes Corporation and the Humanitarian Aid Corporation deliver clothing to the affected people. For its part, the La Perla Wellness Center is in charge of feeding the pets; while the Ministry of Health has enabled a service point. Additionally, the Ministry of Economic Development accompanies six merchants who suffered losses in their businesses due to the emergency.

“There are two fronts: a technical one, to restore water, energy and gas; and the other is the social one, in which we are dedicated to people, we will continue there. With each family we are going to assess the damages. Refrigerators floated, washing machines floated; If they had a television, they were also damaged. There has to be compensation. It is not leaving them as they were before, it is leaving them in better circumstances than they were. And that has to be a commitment from us, as the Mayor’s Office and as EPM,” added the local president.

The DAGRD continues to evaluate the structural damage of the homes, to protect the lives of those affected, and the Secretariat of Inclusion and Family has deployed a social and logistical team to provide psychosocial and humanitarian support. The secretariats of Youth, Peace and Human Rights, Education and Buen Comienzo support logistical work; and the Ministry of the Environment and Emvarias carry out waste management actions.
