The Ministry of Education of Antioquia indicated that in 2025 it will extend the extended school day to the 762 educational centers in the department. The measure covers 72 thousand students; In addition, with an investment of $40 billion, the “Let’s all learn to read” program will be implemented, which will benefit 180,000 primary school children.
“We have ensured that children from sixth to ninth in Antioquia have the possibility of learning English, robotics, becoming familiar with a sport or a cultural expression. The Extended Day goes along the lines of reinforcing what we have said about the autonomy of care, of assuming, as a Departmental Government, a good part of what the burden of care represents for our women, so that they free up time that can be used in studying, learn, work, undertake,” explained Andrés Julián Rendón, governor of Antioquia.
The extended day, which last year had a pilot in 14 educational institutions, will benefit this year 72 thousand students and 3,500 teachers from 116 municipalities not certified in education.
“My students are taking advantage of their free time, parents are happy. On days when there is an extended day, we give them lunch and a snack so they can attend the activities. With the injection of $100 million we will be able to improve the process with tools to enhance their skills in sports, culture, English and technology,” said Marta Ligia Restrepo, rector of the Las Cruces Rural Educational Institution, in San Andrés de Cuerquia.
Likewise, the expansion of the “Let’s all learn to read” program was announced, an initiative of the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations, the Fraternidad Foundation and the Library Mouse Foundation, so that 180 thousand children—all of the primary school students—finish learning to read and acquire the reading comprehension required for a student of their age.
The program, which will have an investment of $40 billion this year, will provide recreational and educational tools to teachers to improve children’s reading lessons.
Likewise, during this year, 425 educational institutions will benefit from the “Strengthening of secondary and technical secondary education” program in grades 10 and 11 for the transition to higher education, with an investment of $14 billion . “This program will facilitate the transition to higher education and will have decisive results in the Saber Tests,” explained the governor.
Through the Ministry of Education, the Departmental Administration carried out a promotion and relocation process in the teaching ranks, which benefited 5,297 teachers, whose investment was $19,154 million. “The administrative acts were carried out at the end of the year and all teachers received the corresponding retroactive payment. The contest was a success, a thank you to the Ministry of Education because it was a very quick process,” highlighted Sandra Pino, teacher at the IE Liceo José María Villa de Sopetrán.
To continue expanding educational coverage in the department, the enrollment campaign is advancing with the goal of having more than 430,000 students in classrooms by 2025. To date, about 80% of the students have completed their registration and enrollment process.
