The two-time Olympian ended up against the door of a van on December 3 in Belgium: “I haven’t been on a bike for ten weeks. I have to do things calmly to fully recover my shoulder”
On Thursday he greeted his Soudal-Quick Step teammates on retreat in Calpe (Spain) with a video message: “I’ll be back, I’ll be ready for the Tour de France. I miss the bike, five weeks without being able to do anything, but I won’t do anything crazy, we’ll he wants patience.” Today Remco Evenepoel is more relieved: the visit to his right shoulder (fractured scapula) and hand went well, and the two-time Belgian Olympian got the green light: “Finally I can go back to training on the rollers on Saturday.”
his words

On December 3, while he was training alone in Belgium, followed by his wife Oumi in the car, Evenepoel crashed into the door of a postal van, which a postman had carelessly left open. Fracture of the right shoulder blade, right hand and contusions to the lungs: the impact at around 45 km per hour, no less. “The first weeks after the accident were difficult, because it happened just as I was starting to train again. I tried to keep my mind clear during the holidays and not think about it: I had spent five weeks of rest at the end of the season without doing any sport, and I’ve been out of action for another five weeks: it means 10 weeks away from the bike. Now I can finally get on the rollers on Saturday and start rehabilitation with the physiotherapist too. I know I’ll have to take things slowly, because first of all I need it of a complete recovery of my shoulder, which it is not yet ready to absorb the shock of the bumps on the road.”

what a season
—
Evenepoel comes from an almost unrepeatable season: at 24 years old he won his second Liège-Bastogne-Liège, third place in the standings at the Tour de France (he was making his debut) behind Pogacar and Vingegaard, two Olympic titles in Paris in the in line (lone escape) and in the time trial (beat Ganna), and then the third world title of his career with gold in the time trial (still ahead of Ganna). Finally, second place at the Giro di Lombardia beaten by Pogacar. “I think I can start training regularly outdoors, on the road, in the first days of February – explains Evenepoel -. At this point I hope to get back into the race at the Freccia del Brabante on Friday 18 April, it’s racing close to home and it will be a great motivation. Better to return to racing in one day than in stages, and then I love the Ardennes classics, with three months of training I will be in good shape, I will do the Tour of Romandie (29 April-4 May), then the Dauphiné Criterium in France (8-15 June), the national championships and the altitude retreat in view of the Tour de France. I want to be at 200% at the start of the Tour (5-27 July). and, if things go as planned, I am confident that I can be in great shape at the start to achieve an excellent result.”
