Rory McIlroy vs. Ernie Els: A Clash of Opinions on the PGA Tour Champions

Ernie Els and Rory McIlroy

Premier Golf Attitude: Rory McIlroy’s Future on the PGA Tour

The Players Championship was approaching, and Rory McIlroy, true to form, showed his candid side. When asked, “Do you see yourself playing on the PGA Tour Champions at 50?” the North Irishman was straightforward. Despite the prestige of the senior circuit, which has been home to some of golf’s greats, McIlroy had a clear vision. In particular, his comments caught the attention of one golfer, South African legend Ernie Els, who wasted no time in responding.

McIlroy’s Unshielded Words

“I won’t play on the PGA Tour Champions. I’ve always been honest in my words. After turning pro in 2007, I’ve had a career spanning 18 years, which is quite an accomplishment in professional sports. When it’s time to retire, I will leave the field with dignity and in good health,” McIlroy asserted. “Competing at 50, to be blunt, that would be getting bogged down for me.”

Ernie Els’ Gentle Persuasion

The responses from the South African golf icon did not go unnoticed; Els responded spiritedly via X platform:

“You know, at 35, I thought I’d never play past 50. Now, at 55, I’m having a ball. The Champions Tour is incredibly satisfying,” Els reflected. “The camaraderie, growing together through juniors, fantastic sponsors, and partners—it’s a goldmine of fulfillment.”

When Will We See McIlroy on the Champions Tour?

The casual banter might just hint at a future meeting at the PGA Tour Champions in 2039! Only time will tell if McIlroy will follow in the footsteps of legendary golfers like Els and embrace life on this revered senior circuit.
