Cuauhtémoc, Chih.- Mayor Beto Pérez presented Erick Josué Portillo Rodríguez with the “Golden Cuauhtémoc”, who was crowned Athlete of the Year 2023-2024, an award granted by the Municipal Government through the Municipal Institute of Physical Culture and Sports.
At the ceremony, 37 more awards were presented, with Katia Nahomi Cruz Carrasco receiving the “Silver Cuauhtémoc” in the jazz discipline; and the “Bronze Cuauhtémoc” Ana Victoria Calzadillas Batista, from the Brazilian jitsu discipline.
The special awards went to the racquetball player Jorge Armando Gutiérrez Ortiz, as Ambassador; for the basketball player Esteban Ezequiel Riacho Amador, for Sports Merit; and for the coach of the porra discipline Alexis Hibraim Orozco Reza, as a Sports Career.
In his message, municipal president Elías Humberto Pérez Mendoza celebrated the presence of the families who are behind the achievements of the winners, who with discipline and perseverance, with learning from defeats, have achieved important triumphs that put the name of Cuauhtémoc aloft.
For his part, Erick Portillo, whose greatest achievement was representing Mexico in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, in high jump, called on everyone to fight for their academic, sporting and professional dreams, working with discipline and perseverance.
In his career, Portillo was a three-time First Force National Champion; Pan American Champion in Cali-Vali; Fifth Place in the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador; Fifth Place in Diamond League, Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Poland; and Top 10 in the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile.
Local deputy Saúl Mireles Corral recognized all the winners. He mentioned that sport keeps children and young people away from negative things. He congratulated the Municipal Institute of Physical Culture and Sports for the effort to promote the different sports disciplines.
The director of the Municipal Institute of Physical Culture and Sports, Abel Antillón, stated that the Athlete of the Year award recognizes the victories, perseverance and sacrifice of the winners, whom he invited to continue fighting for their dreams.
