According to what some sources told ESPN, it is likely that The NBA will launch an investigation into the Philadelphia 76ers this week regarding the real conditions of Joel Embiid. The big man, we remember, did not play the preseason for what the team defined as one “management of left knee injury”. Therefore, he also missed the first game of the regular season against the Milwaukee Bucks and will also be out in the other two games scheduled this week: Friday against the Toronto Raptors and Sunday against the Indiana Pacers.
It is customary for the NBA to launch an investigation whenever a superstar is unavailable for a nationally televised game. The 76ers said Embiid is “responding well to his personalized recovery plan” and will intensify its return-to-field activities. This is part of the new normal for Embiid this particular season.
The plan is expected to include periodic rest periods during the regular season and routine evaluations by doctors and the 76ers’ medical staff. Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey told ESPN’s Tim Bontemps earlier this month that Philadelphia would try to keep both Embiid and Paul George out of back-to-back games this season:
“We’re going to be smart about it. Both Paul [George] that Joel probably won’t play many, if any, close games.”
Embiid also told Bontemps:
“If I had to make a prediction, I would probably never play back-to-back games again for the rest of my career.”
Embiid lost between 25 and 30 pounds during the offseason, with hopes of losing more, and will continue to wear a brace on his left knee. The big man played just 39 games last season due to multiple knee injuries. He returned in time to play against the New York Knicks in the playoffs, but he didn’t do so at 100%. He continued to play for Team USA this summer, helping the Americans win their fifth consecutive gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
