The XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, had just ended, and the first version of Renault Zoe was presented, ready to carve out a niche for itself in the segment of electric city cars. Just this year, the French company announced the end of production of this model. It is well known that electric cars tend to cost more than their combustion-engined counterparts, but how much has this trend changed? from 2014 to 2024? Here is the analysis, taking as a reference a relatively cheap model of electric car such as the Renault Zoe, and the comparison with the average Italian family income about ten years ago and now.

According to Istat data on living conditions and income in 2014, average annual net income per family was 29,472 euroscorresponding to an average income of 2,456 euros per month. The curve had been stabilizing for a couple of years, following the steep fall caused by the 2009 crisis, resulting from the global domino effect caused by subprime mortgages, which had led to an overall reduction of about 12% in the purchasing power of families, linked to the reduction in income from work. At the same time, the electric car market was a small part of what it has become today, and models like the very first Zoe were pioneers of the technology that came to follow. How have things changed about ten years later? Istat always communicates this in their report on theanno 2022latest available data: it is estimated that families resident in Italy have received a net income equal to 35,995 euros on averagecorresponding to an income of approximately 3,000 euros per month. The increase in absolute terms (+6.5%) is notable compared to previous years, also thanks to the economic and employment recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. Nonetheless, it is still worth noting the data ofinflation continues to rise (+8.7% the average annual variation of the harmonized index of consumer prices, IPCA, consumer price index) which alters the ability to benefit from the wealth accrued and which decreases in real terms the family income, or the purchasing power. In this context, the list price of the last model of Renault Zoe before it went out of production fits in: a decisive 33.500 euroalways turnkey, including batteries. Of course, you buy a different car: the 2023 Zoe Equilibre R110 has 108 HP, with a 52 kWh battery that allows a combined Wltp cycle range of 395 km and can also be charged at high power, significantly reducing charging times. Very different from the small Zoe Life R240, which with its 22 kWh baby battery allowed a range in the old Nedc cycle of 195 km, in addition to the much lower power data: only 88 HP. They are therefore two models (always basic) but different, the first precursor of the second, with less capacity on the road and more immature technology.
