Egypt Rises as Contender in African Basketball: Pharaohs Aim for Glory in Angola
From Pretenders to Outsiders: Egypt’s Basketball Resurgence
The last time Pharaohs ruled African basketball courts was 43 years ago. However, the tides have turned during the recent FIBA AfroBasket tournaments. Egypt has transformed from pretenders into outsiders, poised to challenge for the title in the upcoming 31st AfroBasket, set to take place in Angola from August 12 to 24.
World Ranking Buzzing with Potential
Currently ranked 5th in Africa and 38th in the world, Egypt’s recent performances have placed them squarely on the radar of basketball enthusiasts across the continent.
Key Players to Watch
- Assem Marei, an All-Star of AfroBasket 2013 and winner of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) 2025, could be a game-changer for Egypt. His family ties might prevent him from playing, but the Egyptian contingent would dearly love to have him on board.
- Patrick Gardner offers a constant threat to opponents with his solid outside game and ability to reach the basket. In AfroBasket qualifiers, he averaged 14.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
- Anas Mahmoud, the Al Ittihad pivot, brings depth and rebounding prowess. In the qualifiers, he posted 7.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.
- Amr El Gendy, a veteran playmaker with five AfroBaskets under his belt, uses his experience to control the game’s pace. His teammate, Ehab Amin, provides excellent marking and rebound collection, facilitating Egypt’s attack.
Technical Staff: Mohamed Mounir El-Kerdany
Coach Mohamed Mounir El-Kerdany steers the Egyptian team, taking the reins in the second round of the playoffs after Henrik Rodl’s departure. With a 1-2 record under his tenure, El-Kerdany looks to improve on Egypt’s third-place finish in the qualifiers.
Despite a 3-3 record in the qualifiers, Egyptian players remain confident. They face a tough group, including defending champions Senegal, resilient Mali, and surprise package Uganda.
