Midfielder Eduardo Bovet collapsed during Sunday’s match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan in Serie A and was put into a drug-induced coma. This resulted in the match being stopped immediately.

Team-mates reacted quickly and summoned medical staff, while players from both teams gathered around the 22-year-old Bovet to watch. Bovet was immediately taken on a stretcher to the Careggi Hospital in Florence.

Fiorentina said in a statement: “The club and the University Hospital Carregui announce that Eduardo Bovet is currently under medical sedation and is admitted to the intensive care unit. Initial cardiac and neurological assessments have shown no acute impairment of his central nervous system and cardiorespiratory function. “Further evaluation will take place within the next 24 hours.”

According to a report from Sky Italia, the good news was that Bove regained consciousness in the ambulance and was able to breathe on his own.

In the aftermath of this shocking incident, Bovet’s parents and girlfriend, Fiorentina manager Raffaele Palladino and several team-mates and club officials were rushed to hospital. The city’s mayor also made an appearance to express his shared concern and support for the young athlete.

Outside the hospital, Fiorentina fans unfurled a touching banner that read: “Forza Eduardo, Florence is with you.” This sentiment was echoed by Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso, who said: “We are in constant communication with Eduardo’s family in the United States and are providing our support. Forza Eduardo, we are with you. You are an incredibly strong child. “I sympathized with him.

Messages of solidarity poured in on social media, highlighting the sense of community in football. Inter midfielder Federico Dimarco, who was playing at the time of the accident, posted the message: “Forza Edu, we are all with you and your family.”

The incident occurred in the 16th minute amid a VAR warning, with witnesses saying Bovet was trying to tie his shoelaces when he suddenly collapsed.

Fiorentina players were visibly shocked, and many were comforted by team staff and opponents. The match was abandoned with the score 0-0.

The incident has deeply saddened Fiorentina fans and players and brought back painful memories of former captain David Astori, who tragically passed away before a match in Udine in March 2018.

In particular, Bove’s collapse is the second shocking incident in Serie A this year, with Roma defender Evan Ndica experiencing a similar crisis during a match against Udine in April.

Bove, who developed through Roma’s youth academy, joined Fiorentina on loan this off-season with an option to make the move permanent. Romelu Lukaku, Bove’s team-mate at Roma last season, shared a photo of the pair together during a match, writing: “We love you, little brother. We’re all with you.”
