Coaching Carousel: Stephens Out at Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan Also Makes Change
Mid-Major Programs Seek New Leadership
Both Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan announced Sunday they have parted ways with their men’s basketball coaches, signaling a period of transition for both programs.
Dwayne Stephens’ Tenure at Western Michigan Ends
Dwayne Stephens, a former longtime assistant coach at Michigan State, has been relieved of his duties as head coach at Western Michigan after four seasons. During his time with the Broncos, Stephens compiled a record of 42-84 and never achieved a winning season.
Detroit Free Press – “As for Stephens, he took over in Kalamazoo in 2022-23 and never got the program off the ground, going 42-84 over his four years and never posting a record better than 12-20.”
Western Michigan Athletic Director Dan Bartholomae stated, Coach Stephens has elevated our men’s basketball program in many ways during his tenure as our Head Coach. He has represented our Broncos with integrity and class, and we are grateful for his contributions.
Bartholomae also indicated the decision was made in anticipation of the opening of a new basketball training and competition venue.
Eastern Michigan Moves On From Stan Heath
Eastern Michigan also announced a coaching change, parting ways with Stan Heath after five seasons. Heath’s record at EMU was 57-99. He previously coached at South Florida, Arkansas, and Kent State.
Eastern Michigan Athletic Director Scott Wetherbee expressed gratitude for Heath’s commitment, stating, We are grateful for Coach Heath’s commitment to this program, which spans five years as head coach and more than four decades as a student-athlete and proud alumnus of this University.
He added, He cares deeply about Eastern Michigan, and I wish him and his family the very best.
Gambling Scandal at Eastern Michigan
Recent events at Eastern Michigan have been overshadowed by a gambling scandal involving three players – Da’Sean Nelson, Jalen Terry, and Carlos Hart – who were indicted in January on charges related to a point-shaving scheme spanning from 2022-2025. Hart was accused of participating in the scheme even as playing for New Orleans in the 2023-24 season.
While there was no indication the gambling scandal directly influenced Heath’s firing, it adds to a challenging period for the program.
Potential Future for Stephens?
Speculation exists regarding Dwayne Stephens’ future, with some suggesting a potential return to Michigan State, where he served as an assistant coach for 19 years.
