NBA basketball player for ten years, two-time Olympic vice-champion with the Blues and now Olympiakos player, Evan Fournier knows the differences between American basketball and European basketball. Is it easier to score in the NBA than in FIBA? The French guard gave his opinion.
This is a debate that comes up quite often.
While the NBA has become more offensive-oriented than ever in recent years, several European superstars of the League have stated that it is easier to score baskets in the United States compared to the FIBA game. Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic and Lauri Markkanen have given their arguments: less space, smaller court, 3-second rule on defense, more intensity, fewer whistles in favor of the attack…
Asked about the subject, new Olympiakos player Evan Fournier expressed his opinion (via Eurohoops) :
“In the NBA, there are better man defenders, players who are faster to follow you on the perimeter. But if you can get past your defender, it’s easier to score a basket in the NBA than in Europe. That’s why players like Luka Doncic say it’s easier to score in the NBA: he gets past his guy every time. In Europe, if you get past your guy, you have a second and third defender who are ready to help.”
For Vavane, the difference is therefore mainly at the level of defensive assistance. It is a bit like this what did Nikola Jokic say? some time ago: “In the NBA, when you pass your guy, you can see the help coming. In Europe, the help is already there, so you always have to be one step ahead.”
The issue of defensive help is obviously related to the 3-second rule in defense. In the NBA, defenders are not allowed to stay in the paint for more than three seconds. In FIBA basketball, this rule does not exist, which allows players to “camp” in the paint. This inevitably complicates things a little when it comes to getting closer to the basket after getting past their opponent.
More generally, with the preponderant place that the 3-point shot has in the NBA and the resulting spacing, attackers have more space and offensive freedom. Defenders can come to the aid less under penalty of being sanctioned by the player they are supposed to defend.
Now playing for Olympiakos, Evan Fournier will have to adapt to a new style of play, even if he has regularly shown during his international career that he could be formidable in FIBA basketball.
