Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – A horrific incident at the Jet Set nightclub in the capital has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with the confirmed death toll now standing at 226. The collapse of the club’s roof during a Merengue music performance on April 8th has shaken the nation and prompted a widespread investigation into safety standards and building maintenance.

Among those tragically lost were a remarkable array of prominent figures – from high-ranking bankers and established baseball stars, to respected politicians and fashion designers. The list of victims includes Governor Neleshi Kruz of the Monte Christ Province, who tragically died after attempting to raise the alarm, Eduardo Grulon, the owner of Grupo Popular, and several other key figures in Dominican society.

“The building, originally constructed for film screenings, simply wasn’t designed to withstand the dynamic forces created by the dancing and music within a large venue,” stated Christian Rohas, a former head of the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects, and Geodesists. “The repairs carried out in 2010-2015 appear to have utilized unsuitable materials, leading to the ultimate failure.”

The Jet Set nightclub, a long-standing fixture of Santo Domingo’s entertainment scene since its reconstruction in 2010-2015, quickly gained a reputation as a favorite among tourists and VIPs. Its enduring popularity stemmed from its vibrant atmosphere and status as a premier destination for parties for over a decade. Rescue efforts are currently underway, with teams from Puerto Rico and Mexico assisting Dominican authorities in the arduous task of searching for survivors and recovering remains.

President Luis Abinader has declared a period of national mourning, extending until April 13th. Dominicans are rallying together, simultaneously organizing blood donations and providing crucial support to the families of the victims.
