The 2025 MLB season may be over, but the buzz around the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) is already building. The Los Angeles Dodgers have their first representative on Team USA, with All-Star catcher Will Smith being named to the roster Tuesday.
In the last WBC in 2023, Smith and Mookie Betts were the two Dodgers representatives. However, two-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw had to withdraw at the last minute. This time around, Smith will don the red, white, and blue, but Betts’ status remains unclear.
“We’re excited to have Will on board. His offense and defense make him a valuable addition to our roster,” said Team USA manager Mark DeRosa.
Smith Joins Team USA, Betts’ Status Unclear
Smith, a two-time All-Star, has been a crucial part of the Dodgers’ success since debuting in 2019. He’s known for his powerful left-handed swing and is an elite defender behind the plate. With shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. already committed, Betts could potentially join Smith in the outfield if he decides to participate.
Vesia Eyes Bullpen Spot After Tough 2025 Season
Meanwhile, another Dodger is in the mix for a WBC spot. According to Jack Harris of the L.A. Times, left-handed reliever Alex Vesia is under consideration for a bullpen spot. Vesia enjoyed an excellent 2024 but struggled in the 2025 season, as did much of the Dodgers’ bullpen.
“We want our best. Alex has proven he can handle high-leverage situations. We’re considering him,” said Team USA general manager Michael Hill.
Vesia posted a 3.02 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 59.2 innings this year. Despite his struggles, he remains one of the better left-handed relievers in recent years.
Blue Jays Pay Tribute to Vesia Family
In a poignant moment this postseason, the Toronto Blue Jays relief pitchers paid respects to Vesia and his wife, Kayla, by wearing Vesia’s number (51) on their caps. Vesia missed the World Series due to the tragic passing of his daughter, which was revealed after the fact.
Team USA Pitching Staff Takes Shape
With Paul Skenes, Matthew Boyd, and Garrett Whitlock already committed, Vesia would provide a left-handed option out of the bullpen. Teams need a minimum of 14 pitchers on their final WBC roster.
Did You Know?
- Will Smith was the only Dodger to represent Team USA in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
- Alex Vesia has thrown at least 50 innings in four of his five full Major League seasons.
