Wexford Native Secures Top GAA Position

Derek Kent of Wexford has been elected as the 42nd Uachtarán of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The election took place during the opening session of the 2026 GAA Congress, with Kent receiving a decisive victory on the first count.

Kent secured 169 votes out of 277 cast, comfortably surpassing the required quota of 139. He defeated Tipperary’s Ger Ryan, who received 76 votes, and Sligo’s John Murphy, who garnered 32 votes.

Transition and Timeline

Kent will initially serve as Uachtarán Tofa until Jarlath Burns completes his three-year term in February 2027. Following Burns’ departure, Kent will officially assume the role of GAA President, leading the association.

Extensive GAA Experience

Kent brings a wealth of administrative experience to the position. He served as the Wexford county chair from 2017 to 2020 and has held the position of Leinster chair since 2023.

He also chaired the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) for three years during Larry McCarthy’s presidency.
