August 20 – 10:41 PM – MILANO

The world of sports is mourning the tragic death of Daniela Larreal Chirinos, a former Venezuelan cycling champion. The woman was found lifeless in her home in Las Vegas, after presumably choking on food. Larreal had a job at a hotel in the city and her unannounced absence, which had lasted since August 12, worried those who worked with her. When the police entered the home, four days ago, they could only confirm the death. The officers immediately noticed food remains in her trachea, which leads to the conclusion that the death was accidental.

WHO WAS

Daniela Larreal Chirinos was one of Venezuela’s most famous athletes. She competed in the Olympics five times, from Barcelona in 1992 to London in 2012. She never won a medal, but she did win two golds at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador in 2002 and two silvers at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo the following year. She was also a major figure in political activism, having always been highly critical of Chavez and his sports minister. Because she had also held a very rigid position against Maduro, she was effectively exiled from the country. Larreal reinvented herself in Miami, where she worked as an Uber driver, and then as a waitress in Las Vegas.
