Judo Veteran Luis Torres Cobas Continues to Dominate on World Stage

A Champion Across Borders
Luis Torres Cobas, a judoka competing in the veteran’s category, has established himself as a global force, achieving success while representing both Cuba and Spain. The Guantanamo native has secured six world championships in his category, along with numerous silver and bronze medals.
Despite residing in Spain, Torres Cobas maintains a strong connection to his Cuban roots, frequently returning to the island. “Guantánamo is a incredibly important part of my life; I was born here and it is the place where I took my first sporting steps,” he stated.
Early Beginnings and a Lifelong Passion
Torres Cobas began his judo journey at the age of 12 in Guantanamo, initially observing and learning from his older brother and neighborhood peers. He trained at the “Rafael Carrión” academy, which is now the “Ismaelillo” Ludoteca.
“I was in a club with my older brother, but I didn’t participate due to the fact that I was little, so I learned by observing little by little and putting the techniques into practice with the neighbors in the neighborhood,”

His dedication and persistence caught the attention of coaches, leading to his release from military service to focus on judo. He achieved success in national youth competitions, earning gold and bronze medals in the 70-kilo division and being recognized as the most outstanding athlete.
International Recognition
Torres Cobas’s achievements have garnered recognition from the Pan American Judo Confederation, which named him one of the best male athletes in America for his performances in 2025. He has also been recognized in Guantanamo province for his international success in 2024 and 2025.
He has earned nine medals in the over 100-kilo division in European and world championships for veterans, including six gold, two silver and one bronze.
Representing Spain and Cuba
After living in Ukraine and teaching self-defense, Torres Cobas settled in Spain, where he continued coaching and competing. He recently achieved two gold medals at world championships representing Cuba in 2024, and continues to compete for Spain in European events.
