Cork’s Masterclass Outclasses Waterford

In a one-sided Allianz Hurling League Division 1A clash at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork began their campaign under new manager Ben O’Connor with a 15-point demolition of Waterford. The score finished 3-26 to 0-12 in favor of Cork, mirroring the Rebel County’s 15-point loss to Tipperary in last year’s All-Ireland final.

From a 15-point drubbing at the hands of Tipperary last summer, the O’Connor reign began in style as they filleted Waterford by the same scoreline.

Waterford’s Struggle Against Experienced Cork Side

Fielding a heavily depleted side, Waterford was no match for the experienced Cork outfit, which included 10 of the team that started last year’s All-Ireland final. With just six starters from their Munster Championship opener against Clare, Waterford struggled to keep pace with their opponents.

Cork were clinical throughout, converting all 10 of their first-half attempts at goal and extending their lead in the second half. Waterford’s scoring was limited to just two points from play, from free-taker Reuben Halloran and Jamie Barron.

Horgan Expects Championship Clash to be Different

All-time championship top scorer Patrick Horgan, who retired after last year’s All-Ireland final, expects a much different encounter when the sides meet again in the Munster SHC. He acknowledged the challenge faced by Waterford’s understrength side against an experienced Cork team in their first league game and a big crowd at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

“When they meet again, it will be in Walsh Park and it could be a very different game to the game we saw Sunday,” Horgan said.

Waterford’s record in the round-robin championship since 2018 is poor, with just one win in eight games, but they did topple Cork in Walsh Park in 2024. With a full-strength squad available, Horgan believes Waterford could pose a tougher challenge in the championship.

Cork’s Options for Frees

With Horgan’s retirement, Cork’s freetaking duties are wide open. New manager Ben O’Connor has several options, with Declan Dalton sinking a thunderous penalty and both Alan Connolly and Darragh Fitzgibbon converting from frees.

“There are a few options,” Horgan said. “It just depends on the area of the field, how much does it take someone out of position. Deccie Dalton can take them as well as anyone can. Alan Connolly can take them, Darragh Fitzgibbon can take them; it just depends where it is.”
