“Concern about health is actually putting pressure on”… ‘Well-being’ proposed by Lululemon, the ‘Chanel of yoga clothes’ [르포]

Stretch your stiff body and focus on your breathing. Support your body with your arms and feel your body temperature rise as you stretch your legs.

On the 11th, when sunny autumn skies unfolded, global sportswear brand Lululemon prepared a special event. About 60 domestic and foreign media outlets, influencers, and content creators were invited to a group ‘yoga session’ at COEX K-Pop Plaza in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

On this day, about 100 men and women who were interested in yoga gathered at the event venue, regardless of nationality, gender, and age. Those who gathered through yoga changed their clothes in the locker room, put their belongings in the locker, and sat down on the yoga mat.

Lululemon prepared for this day’s event with the slogan ‘Together we grow’.

A yoga class was held by Leah Simmons, founder of the KAAIAA Holistic Wellness Program and Lululemon Ambassador. Participants focused on breathing and imitated the movements to the extent they could.

Gareth Pope, Vice President of Lululemon’s Asia-Pacific region, attended the event and introduced the Global Wellbeing Report published this year.

The Wellbeing Report is an annual Wellbeing Report conducted by Lululemon in 15 major markets around the world (USA, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, China, Japan). The fourth report was released this year, diagnosing the level and suggesting major agendas and improvement plans.

What’s unique about this year’s report is that interest in health actually puts pressure on people. The explanation is that ‘well-being burnout’ comes from the pressure to literally ‘be healthy’.

A whopping 90% of people responded that they were doing more activities to improve their well-being compared to a year ago, but about 45% responded that they were experiencing symptoms of burnout in the process of pursuing well-being. Typical causes of well-being burnout include social expectations that are far from reality, mixed information, and loneliness.

It was analyzed that by gender, men and by generation, the MZ generation are experiencing a higher level of well-being burnout. Approximately 43% and 38% of men and women responded that they were feeling more lonely due to wellness burnout, compared to 76% and 70% of Generation Z and millennials, respectively, who responded that they felt pressure to be healthy. In particular, communication with the community and physical activity were helpful in relieving well-being burnout. By engaging in casual activities with others, people not only felt a stronger connection to their communities, but also strengthened their sense of purpose and improved their overall well-being by about 16%.

This event was also organized with the purpose of bringing together various people to exercise and improve their health.

This is Lululemon’s second offline event in Korea this year, following a pop-up in Seongsu-dong, Seoul last year.

Consumer response was enthusiastic. As a result of receiving applications for the event to be held on the 12th on a first-come, first-served basis, all 120 seats in the morning and afternoon were filled.

A Lululemon official said, “We are continuously carrying out the Well Being campaign with the goal of encouraging everyone to exercise together within the community,” and added, “A variety of activities will be held.”
